"I'm not leaving Cleveland 'til I get laid!" Lea DeLaria emcees the Pride festival.
Audience won't forget DeLaria
Lea DeLaria
U4ia, June 19
by Martha Pontoni
Lea DeLaria, an extraordinary comedian, played to a full house at U4ia on June 19. Her routine, relevant to both men and women, had everyone rolling in the aisles. Her brand of humor, which is more lesbian oriented, was so outrageous that everyone had to laugh. Hearing men chant, “I am a lesbian!" was great,. Watching DeLaria sing a love song to a woman in the front row by climbing up on her chair and practically face-fucking her was equally enjoyable.
The highlight of the show was her questions and answers session. Before the performance the audience wrote down questions about lesbian dating:
"What do you do if your lover doesn't
like her ear tongued?"
DeLaria yells, "Then fist it!" "What do you say to a man who catches you sleeping with his wife?” "Nyah, nyah!"
DeLaria drew a hearty round of applause from the crowd when she endorsed lesbians and gay men working together. She does lesbian humor with some politics thrown in, but she is not a separatist. Her skits on coming out to your parents were something that everyone could identify with. Her Diesel Dyke Academy blew stereotypes to the wind. "You, too, can become a diesel and earn big money driving the big rigs," she intoned--then did a make-over of a "femme" audience member to prove it.
I don't think Cleveland will forget Leah for a long time. I hope she--along with all the other new fresh lesbian and gay talent-are invited back again.
Men and women singing on one stage adds to Pride concert
Never Turning Back North Coast Mens Chorus Windsong Womyn's Ensemble Romanovsky and Phillips Lakewood Civic Auditorium, June 20
by Martha Pontoni
The Never Turning Back concert, on the night of the Pride festival, was moving not only because of the strength of the singing, but also because of the visual impact of having both women and men performing
on the stage.
The concert opened up with a performance from the North Coast Men's Chorus. They were refreshingly gay that night, which was wonderful to see. The final set of Songs were a tribute to those our community has lost to AIDS. When the curtain opened and sections of the Names Project Quilt were revealed, there wasn't a dry eye
in house.
The Windsong Womyn's Ensemble was fabulous. Under the direction of Gayle Pilot, and accompanied by Lisa Rainsong,
they really were quite impressive. It just was too short. Singing only two pieces, one as the "Moral Chorale" of church-ladies, was just not enough. Lisa Rainsong's wonderful piece, "Drawing Down the Moon" just made me itch for more. Let's hope this talented group can treat the community to more very soon.
The gay duo Romonovsky and Phillips were their zany selves. Ron Romonovsky had a injured foot and Paul Phillips' voice was a weakened from a cold, both which took away from their performance. But they were enjoyable anyway and to be honest the two preceding performances were so moving that it really didn't matter.
The coup de grace came at the finale when everyone sang together. The audience was so moved that it gave performers a very long standing ovation which was well deserved.

What a fitting end to Pride Week, with lesbians and gay men singing together for the benefit of the community. I can assure you there wasn't a person in the crowd of over 800 that didn't feel full of pride. What a wonderful event.
